One of the biggest challenges many of us face is comparison.
We see engineers from developed economies building incredible projects, researchers publishing groundbreaking work, or young athletes performing at the highest level. It’s easy to feel as though what they’re doing is beyond our reach.
But before comparing outcomes, we should compare starting conditions.
Many of these individuals begin their journeys very early. They grow up with access to quality education, mentors, modern equipment, stable infrastructure, and communities that encourage their interests. Some are introduced to their craft by parents or relatives who have spent years in the same field.
When we only see the final result, we forget the environment that helped shape it.
That doesn’t mean we lack ability.
I believe Africa has brilliant minds capable of solving complex problems and creating world-class technology. The challenge is not a lack of talent—it is often a difference in opportunity, exposure, and resources.
Rather than being discouraged by the gap, we should ask:
“Given the resources I have today, how do I keep improving?”
Skill compounds.
Knowledge compounds.
Projects compound.
Consistency compounds.
Many great careers are built one day, one book, one project, and one lesson at a time.
Instead of comparing your beginning to someone else’s tenth year, focus on becoming a little better than you were yesterday.
Our starting points may be different, but our commitment to learning, building, and improving is something we can control.
